Tra teatro e giardino: il teatro di verzura di Villa Garzoni

Abstract

Nascosto nel monumentale parco di Villa Garzoni in Toscana, il teatro di verzura della villa è delimitato da siepi in bosso e caratterizzato da piccole absidi con grotte ornamentali, una vasca quadrilobata, quinte verdi e statue delle Muse. Di forma a campana, esso riprende la stessa conformazione della parte bassa del parco stesso, ponendo il visitatore in una dimensione teatrale ed enfatizzando il legame tra scena e giardino. Il suo incerto utilizzo lo rende un luogo di interesse per indagare la vera essenza dei teatri di verzura barocchi e per studiarne la natura.

Hidden in the monumental garden of Villa Garzoni (Tuscany), its hedge theatre is shaped by box hedges and features small apses with ornamental caves, a quatrefoil fountain, and statues of the Muses. Its bell-shaped planimetry recalls that of the lower part of the garden, thus plunging the visitor into a theatrical dimension that emphasises the link between theatre and garden. The questions about the actual use of the theatre make it a focal point for exploring the real nature of baroque hedge theatres.
